House Blackwood is the boisterous, blood-bound powerhouse of the Venzor hinterlands. Born from warring forest clans three centuries ago, they rose through raw strength, unbreakable loyalty, and an unrelenting refusal to bow to anyone. Today they stand as the richest and most militarily dominant house on the coast, ruling with open-handed generosity and thunderous celebration. While other houses scheme in shadows or hide behind etiquette, Blackwood feasts, fights, and bleeds as loud as possible. To the people of Venzor, they are not distant lords but elder siblings who drink, wrestle, and fight alongside the lowest farmer. To their rivals, they are a green-and-black avalanche that cannot be bargained with, only endured, and avoided.

Culture: One can hardly get through a day in Venzor without encountering raucous celebration, elaborate feasting, flowing ale, stomping music, and wild dancing. Whether it’s a successful hunt, a fat harvest, or simply a full moon, the long halls and torchlit fields ring with laughter and slamming tankards. The greatest event is the annual Dance of the Harvest Moon, where the entire population joins in massive, spiraling circles under the night sky, swinging partners, leaping bonfires, and partying until dawn.

Yet for all its jovial glee, Blackwood children learn early that words are cheap until blood gets involved. A man who swears he’ll watch your back during a boar hunt can’t be trusted until he cuts his palm shows the proof. “Promises are easy, but bleeding for a man shows you mean it.” Thus, it is exceptionally common to see the people of Blackwood with rough linen wraps or leather bands tied around their palm. A bare palm with no recent scar or bandage marks someone as untrustworthy and soft.

Education and Arcane Mastery: Education in House Blackwood is rough, practical, and entirely hands-on. By day the work is done, where most care for animals or work the brewhouses. By night, children are taught through bloody stories told around campfires, as adults pass the communal pipe. Elders recount famous battles, ambushes, and heroic last stands, often acting them out with tankards in hand.

Espionage and Subterfuge: House Blackwood is painfully bad at subtlety, and they know it. Espionage and subterfuge are not their game. They much prefer kicking down the front door and letting their fists do the talking. Still, when outright war is too expensive or too risky, they make do with the few blunt tools they have. Under the guise of evoking The Bear’s Tithe, Blackwood warbands openly blockade key roads, river crossings, and trade routes.

Centuries ago, during a brutal era known as the Hard Years, when famine, monsters, and war nearly destroyed every coastal house, High Lord Orwen Blackwood opened his granaries, forests, and herds to his rivals, and saved them from collapse. In return, the desperate lords signed the treaty The Bear’s Tithe. It stated that Blackwood would be allowed to call upon them for resources and favors “as needed.” The document was vague, open-ended, and never provided an expiration.

Thus, whenever they please, Blackwood interferes with passing merchants, nobles and even pilgrims. With roaring confidence, they declare “Your ancestor’s debt is due.” With no means to oppose them, the tithe is paid bitterly. This lets Blackwood weaken rivals while maintaining a thin (and very loud) veneer of legal right.

Military: House Blackwood fields the most feared and physically dominant fighting force on the coast. Every Blackwood soldier is rigorously trained to wield any weapon that comes to hand: axe, sword, spear, bow, or shield. They drill relentlessly until switching from one weapon to another feels as natural as breathing. Yet their true mastery lies in brutal close-quarters combat and overwhelming physicality.

This violent fighting style is called The Bear’s Embrace, which blends raw grappling, crushing strength, and vicious close-range strikes. Warriors fight with heavy cestus gauntlets wrapped around their fists for devastating punches that can shatter ribs and jaws. They pair this with spiked chains that whip out to entangle limbs, rip armor, or yank enemies off their feet. A Bear’s Embrace fighter will happily drop his sword mid-battle, close the distance, lock his bloody hands around an opponent, and finish the fight with sheer brutal power.

At the top of their military hierarchy stand the Blackguards, elite heavy knights clad in dark green-and-black plate armor. These terrifying warriors specialize in heavy armor training, wielding massive weapons, and fear tactics. They are trained to instantly read and counter any fighting style they face, adapting on the fly with frightening versatility. Whether fighting mounted, on foot, in forests, or on open fields, they remain flexible and lethal. Many of them bear a great number of wraps across their body, signifying the numerous blood oaths they bare, not just for the house, but for the brothers standing beside them.

Political Influence: House Blackwood wins the hearts of its people through open-handed generosity and equality at the table. While the High Lord sits clearly above the common man in matters of law and war, they rarely act distant or superior. But above all, they never ask the common man to do that which they wound’t. During hard winters or poor harvests, the lord’s granaries open wide, and the Blackwoods join the failing farms with tools in hand.

Festivals and celebrations are always open to all. A Blackwood wouldn’t be caught dead throwing a party only for the “elite”. Throughout these events, they host frequent contests of skill, public tournaments of animal handling, brewing, wrestling, archery, and craftsmanship. Winners receive prizes, glory, and sometimes even positions in the Blackguard or stewardship roles. Thus, those who live in Venzor come to see one another as family, regardless of blood.

Wealth: The richest of the four houses, House Blackwood stewards its resource rich land with a master’s touch. Tobacco is the true center of their wealth, with vast, rolling fields of rich green leaf stretching for miles across the plains. Blackwood tobacco is so fine, that no other house even attempts to grow their own. Merchants from every rival house and foreign port sail in to buy it by the wagonload.

Harvest season turns into one long celebration of hard work and harder drinking. Entire communities come together to cut, cure, and bundle the leaves, with massive communal feasts and smoke-outs every night. Huge bonfires roar while men and women pass around pipes carved from local wood, some as long as a man’s forearm. Thick, fragrant clouds of tobacco smoke hang over the fields for weeks, mixing with the smell of roasting meat and brewing ale. Many blood oaths are sworn in these hazy, firelit circles under the moon.

Beyond this, they cultivate dark, herb-infused ale, have an impressive timber industry, and are reknowned beast tamers. Blackwood-bred warhorses, prize steers, fierce hunting hounds, loyal guard dogs, and even exotic beasts fetch premium prices from nobles and merchants alike. The skill and reputation of their handlers mean buyers pay top coin, knowing they are getting the best-trained and hardiest animals money can buy.

The Old Blood

The Old Blood serves as House Blackwood’s living memory. They are made up of a loose but deeply respected circle of skalds, shamans, elders, and lore-keepers who carry the oral traditions of Venzor and the ancient forest clans.

Hedonistic and wise, they are found in the thick of every great feast, stomping and roaring the old songs, passing the long-pipe, and leading the spiraling Dance of the Harvest Moon with reckless joy. Yet the very next morning the same men and women sit quietly by the great hearth or under ancient oaks, sharing tales passed down for centuries.

To the common folk they are both beloved uncles/aunts and near-mythic figures. Children grow up begging to hear their stories, and warriors touch their blood-wraps respectfully when an Old Blood passes. It is rare for High Lady Blackwood to make a political decision without their counsel.

The Blackguard

The Blackguard are the living embodiment of House Blackwood’s strength and fury, a brotherhood of elite heavy warriors feared and respected across the entire coast. While other orders may favor pageantry and formations, the Blackguard are ruthlessly efficient instruments of war. When their dark green-and-black banners crest the horizon and the thunder of their charge begins, even the boldest enemies feel their stomachs churn.

To earn the right to wear the black bear upon their breastplate, a candidate must first swear the Bleeding Oath in their mid-teens, cutting their palm before the assembled Blackguard and the Old Blood. From that day forward, their life is one of constant challenge and celebration. They move into the brutal training grounds beneath Castle Durgannon and begin a decade of punishing preparation that breaks most aspirants. Training is often overseen personally by High Lady Blackwood and senior members of the Old Blood, who ensure that every warrior remembers they fight not just for glory, but for their people.

Every dawn, the training yards echo with the crash of steel, the roar of grappling warriors, and the crack of spiked chains. While they master every weapon, and over a dozen martial techniques, their true art is The Bear’s Embrace, a savage close-quarters style that favors raw power, unbreakable grapples, and overwhelming aggression. Wrapped in heavy cestus gauntlets, they shatter bones with punches that can crumple platemail. Their spiked chains whip out to ensnare limbs, yank riders from saddles, or rip shields away before they close in for the kill with bare, bloody hands and grinning teeth.

Yet it is off the battlefield where the Blackguard truly come alive. They are larger-than-life revelers who carouse with legendary excess. A Blackguard fresh from victory will storm into the nearest hall or tavern, slam a sack of coin on the bar, and declare a feast for the entire town. They challenge farmers and lords alike to drinking contests, arm-wrestling, bare-knuckle bouts, and wild storytelling. Always laughing, bleeding from fresh scars, and seeking the next thrill, Blackguards of the epitome of extremes. To them, glory earned must be celebrated loud enough for their ancestors to hear.

The Bleeding Oath

“Today I bleed, for kin, country, and those in the dirt. And though a wound does scar my flesh, I feel not pain, but pride. Fear is for lesser men. Mine path is always forward, let cowards be the ones to piss themselves in retreat.

What my calloused hands behold, becomes the herald of death. Axe, blade, chain, or broken fingers, it matters not. In my grip I welcome foes to grim death and the darkness beyond. Those who go by my hand are honored indeed, for who can shame a death as certain as the one I wield?

A quiet life is wasted true, for it’s only promise is that it won’t be long. I seek not the comfort of silken sheets and easy morns. No, it is the darkest night, the hardest climb, the thrilling hunt that sings throughout my soul. Comfort is a slow poison that rots not only flesh, but mind and spirit all.

When peace falls over war, I seek trials worthy of my strength. So that after each drink I share, each fit of laughter lost, I stand taller, confident of their earning. Let others waste away in mediocrity. I shall be the one to bleed, to break, to rise, and roar again.

This is the way of the Blackguard. This is the beating of my heart. Let it never come to question. On this day, and each until my last.”

- High Lady Catherine Blackwood, First to sit on the Throne of Castle Durganon, and Mother of the Blackguards

The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth is a great assembly where the everyday folk of Venzor have real power. Folk from every corner of the domain gather in their towns and discuss their needs. Here, rank means nothing. Debates are loud, passionate, and often filled with drink. When concord is reached, blood oaths are sworn before the masses.

At such gatherings, concerns, needs, and ideas of the common people are shared directly with Blackwood leadership, while the leadership reveals the direction of they itnend to steer the domain.

While the final word remains with House Blackwood, ignoring the Commonwealth is considered both foolish and dishonorable.

A Brief History of House Blackwood:

300 years ago: Catherine Blackwood unites warring forest clans after slaying a monstrous dire bear and swearing the first blood oath, establishing House Blackwood.

295 years ago: Catherine Blackwood established the Blackguard beneath the Grandfather Oak in the courtyard of Castle Durganon.

268 years ago: The first meeting of the Commonwealth gathers on the grounds of Castle Durganon. For three days and nights, nobles, elders, and common folk debate as equals.

245 years ago: The infamous “Night of Seven Songs” occurs when a traveling bard insults House Blackwood’s hospitality. Instead of executing him, the Blackwoods force him to stay for seven nights of feasting and storytelling. By the end, the bard composes the first of the great Blackwood epics, forever cementing their reputation as larger-than-life revelers who turn enemies into allies.

190 years ago: The Bear's Tithe is signed by the Four Houses, ending their drought and starvation and putting house Blackwood in a serious position of power over the others.

135 years ago: Massive expansion of tobacco fields and timber trade brings unprecedented wealth and influence.

90 years ago: The Head of House Darkner challenged the Head of House Blackwood to trial by combat, rather than wage war against their people. Blackwood agreed, and is cut down in a display of utter dominance. Blackwood bitterly gifts House Darkner with their demands, and the coast grows to fear their might.

15 years ago: High Lady Blackwood’s miners uncover a vast ruin beneath the keep, unearthing powerful relics.

Coveted Magic

With no true magic at their disposal, the other houses covet their impressive Blackguards, loyalty of their common folk, and despise the Bear's Tithe.

The Blood Chain

This heavy, brutal spiked chain is the very weapon Catherine Blackwood wielded when she slew the monstrous dire bear threatening her people three hundred years ago. The thick iron links are blackened with age, yet never rust. Dried blood permanently stains the spikes and links. When held, the chain feels warm as if Catherine were still holding it.
