~ Bio ~

House Darkner stands as one of the most formidable and uncompromising powers on the Avalayle Coast. Founded 230 years ago by the legendary warrior-blacksmith Serion Darkner, the house rose through martial excellence and unyielding discipline. They consider themselves the eternal sunrise, the unrelenting force that pushes back chaos and darkness. Each in their lineage is raised to follow the Code of the Burning Heart, a strict chivalric doctrine that demands strength, vigilance, sacrifice, purity, legacy, and etiquette. To House Darkner, weakness is sin, and compromise is failure.

Culture: House Darkner, and all of Evermoor’s culture is steeped in warfare, and the pursuit of military might. Each in their Glorious Lineage embodies a rigid code of chivalry called the Code of the Burning Heart. Their finest warriors, known as the Dawnwardens, swear dramatic lifelong oaths at sunrise on the battlements of Castle Daybreak, vowing to protect sacred sites, noble bloodlines, and the stability of the realm itself. Only after years of training and proving their worth, is an Oathsworn declared a Dawnwarden. This ascension is so significant that House Darkner throws an entire parade and festival in the capital to honor their commitment, which often lasts several days.

As those who proide the Dawnwarden’s with their arms, even Darkner’s blacksmithing are revered. Each piece is crafted with ritualistic care, incorporating timber harvested from sacred groves and iron mined from veins the house has guarded for generations. To wear or wield a piece of Darkner steel is to separate oneself from the common chattel and declare, “My discipline is forged in fire, my resilience hammered into shape. Challenge me if you dare, but you will break before I yield.”

This approach has a unique impact on the peasantry living under Darkner rule. On one hand, the house’s obsession with order and protection means their lands are among the safest on the coast. Banditry is rare, roads are reasonably well-maintained, and the Dawnwardens are known to intervene quickly when villages are threatened. Many peasants genuinely respect the House for this sense of security and for the fact that Darkner lords rarely tolerate open cruelty from their own knights. On the other hand, the House’s rigid code often translates into harsh expectations. Disrespect, laziness, or any perceived challenge to authority is punished severely. Peasants are expected to show proper deference at all times, and minor infractions can lead to public floggings or fines.

Education and Arcane Mastery: House Darkner approaches knowledge with the same relentless discipline they apply to warfare and craftsmanship. Their mastery of alchemy has been fine tuned and militarized. They specialize in potions that sharpen focus, heighten endurance, dull pain, and accelerate healing. Beyond combat alchemy, the house maintains a tradition of negotiation and rhetoric. Young nobles and promising retainers are trained from adolescence in the Art of the Unyielding Word, a method that emphasizes patience, insight, and speech. They study historical battles, legal precedents, and the recorded words of great orators, treating diplomacy as another form of warfare. A Darkner negotiator is expected to be as unbreakable in council as a Dawnwarden is on the battlefield. While this makes House Darkner formidable and respected, it also gives them a reputation for cold calculation and emotional oppression.

Ultimately, while House Darkner is one of the more learned houses along the coast, the common man benefits only via proximity. Peasants are rarely taught anything beyond basic practical skills, and any commoner showing too much aptitude for learning or alchemy is often recruited into service of the house. House Darkner views widespread education as dangerous, capable of breeding discontent or challenging their authority. As a result, most peasants under Darkner rule remain largely uneducated, with literacy being rare outside of those working directly for the house.

Espionage and Subterfuge: While not their primary strength, House Darkner maintains a small but effective intelligence network known as the Rookery. Centered around specially trained messenger eagles and a network of informants, the Rookery gathers information across the coast and spreads rumors to weaken rivals. They also make use of alchemical aids that can induce temporary forgetfulness, compliance, or heightened suggestibility.

For the common folk, the Rookery is an invisible pressure. Many peasants live with the fear that “The eagles are watching.” Informants are recruited from among the lower classes, who are paid per job. While this means open rebellion or banditry is quickly discovered and crushed, it also breeds resentment. The other Houses consider the Rookery to be of little concern.

Military: The Fires of Determination serve as House Darkner’s moral center and beating heart. It is a philosophy that trains warriors to fight with fanatical purpose, believing that an unbreakable will and conviction can overcome superior numbers. Their elite order, the Dawnwardens, are among the most feared and respected fighting forces on the coast. These knights swear their oaths at sunrise, renew them each morning, and wield alchemically enhanced blades capable of bursting into flame. Additionally, they are masters of wielding the shield, and utilize coordinated formations that emphasize their unbreakable defense.

Political Influence: House Darkner wields political power through strength, tradition, and the threat of force. They regularly invoke trial by combat to settle disputes, believing it reveals true worth and divine favor, and often host grand military parades designed to inspire loyalty. While they are not the most diplomatically flexible House, their reputation for unyielding resolve and battlefield excellence gives their words weight in council meetings. This superior identity runs so deep, that even the peasants under House Darkner carry themselves with an air of arrogance.

Wealth: House Darkner’s prosperity rests on three pillars: vast forests, the production of rare perfumes and scented oils, and their legendary blacksmithing trade. Their lumber is prized for shipbuilding and construction across the coast. Their fragrances, distilled from coastal flowers and spices, are luxury goods favored by nobles. But most importantly, their master smiths produce some of the finest tools, armor, and weapons in the region.

FACTIONS

Dawnwardens

The Dawnwardens are the elite military order and public face of House Darkner’s martial might. Clad in finely crafted armor and wielding alchemically tempered blades, they renew their oaths at sunrise each morning. They embody the house’s core ideals of unyielding discipline, fanatical purpose, and the refusal to yield. To the outside world, they are inspiring guardians of order, knights who charge into battle with unbreakable formations and unbreakable will.

The Code of the Burning Heart:

“Let these sacred words be burned into your soul as deeply as the sun burns the sky”.

The Sun Demands Strength

Yielding is weakness. A true guardian does not bend, even when the world itself breaks around them. Stand firm when others fall. Hold the line when others flee. Your body may break, but your will must never.

The Sun Demands Vigilance

Darkness takes many forms, from the bandit in the forest to the whisper of treason in the hall. You must watch not only the horizon, but the hearts of those around you, and the shadows within your own soul. Complacency is the first step toward corruption.

The Sun Demands Sacrifice

To guard the coast is to burn for it. Comfort, desire, fear, and life itself must be offered willingly when duty calls. The greater the flame, the brighter the dawn. Personal happiness is a small price for the eternal sunrise.

The Sun Demands Purity

Corruption and dishonor are stains upon the soul. Cut them away without hesitation, whether in yourself, in your brothers, or in those you protect. A single rotten branch can poison the entire tree.

The Sun Demands Legacy

Your life is fleeting, but your deeds must outshine it. Every action, every battle, every oath must be worthy of being remembered when the final sunrise comes. You do not fight for today alone, you fight so that future generations may stand taller because you stood first.

The Sun Demands Etiquette

Even in fury, even in battle, a guardian of the dawn remains civilized. Conduct yourself with dignity and grace. Speak with measured words. Show respect to worthy foes and proper deference to rightful authority. Rudeness and barbarity are the marks of lesser men. The Sun’s light reveals not only strength, but refinement.

The Fires of Determination

O Sunlight, washing over me,

Drown me in thy riches of gold!

Let thy fire course through my veins,

And make of me, in your forge, an instrument of thy eternal will.

Hear me, O Brilliant Light,

Take this life of flesh and bone, and let me dawn anew,

Unyielding and radiant as thy.

This day, this hour, this breath,

Tis thine alone.

For that which illuminates can never die,

Even when shrouded, the Sun doth not wane,

It shines the same, wreathed in flame.

Now, as the horizon ignites with gold,

So let me breathe the sun unyielding,

The Eternal Dawn doth call again,

For me to rise, the light within it.

-Serion Darkner
(Most common Mantra spoken each morning by the Dawnwardens.)

Rookery

The Rookery is House Darkner’s eyes and ears across the coast. Centered around specially trained messenger eagles and a network of informants, they gather intelligence and spread carefully crafted rumors to shape events in the house’s favor. While smaller and less visible than the Dawnwardens, the Rookery is vital for maintaining the house’s awareness and influence. They prefer subtlety over brute force, operating in the shadows where direct confrontation would be unwise.

Most peasants know the Rookery only as the eagles, a vague but unsettling presence. The knowledge that birds may be watching and that seemingly innocent conversations could be reported creates an atmosphere of caution. Those who work for the Rookery, often tavern keepers, peddlers, or indebted farmers, live with the constant tension of serving two masters.

A Brief History of House Darkner:

230 years ago: Serion Darkner is granted an estate and title by House Chyttering, after aiding the Lord in defending his domain throughout the New Light Purge. He quickly proves his abilities as a warrior, and eventually is named Grand Marshal.

190 years ago: House Darkner uncovers a mine on their lands, and establishes a reputation for its superior blacksmithing techniques. Within 50 years they become the go to house for arming the coast.

90 years ago: The Head of House Darkner challenged the Head of House Blackwood to trial by combat, rather than wage war against their people. Blackwood agreed, and is cut down in a display of utter dominance. Blackwood bitterly gifts House Darkner with their demands, and the coast grows to fear their might.

40 years ago: High Lord Zandran Darkner agrees to aid Cayde Cafferen in his war against the Night Terror, and supplies him with nearly his entire regiment of Dawnwardens. His losses are great, but those who return come back as heroes.

12 years ago: High Lord Zandran Darkner commits to the serious expansion of his lumbering and mining efforts, drawing the ire of the surrounding monsters. The Dawnwardens are tasked with fighting back the beasts while these efforts persist.

Coveted Magic

While lacking true arcane ability, many along the coast seek House Darkner’s impressive alchemical knowledge and libraries.

Sun’s Edge

This finely crafted longsword features a blade of polished steel with a subtle crimson tint. Its crossguard is wrought in the shape of spreading sun rays, and a small ruby is set into the pommel. It has been passed down through every head of House Darkner since the house’s founding, serving as both a symbol of rightful leadership and a potent weapon. The blade glows with a faint red light at sunrise.

The Sunsteel Order

These alchemist blacksmiths are the revered craftsmen of House Darkner. They combine ancient forging techniques with alchemical enhancement, creating weapons and armor of exceptional quality and power. They treat their craft as both art and sacred duty. To the peasantry, these smiths are almost mythical figures. A Darkner-forged tool or weapon is a prized possession, a symbol of quality and the house’s superiority. Many young men and women dream of apprenticing under them, seeing it as the highest honor a commoner can achieve. Those within the order carry themselves with pride, knowing that the strength of the house literally rests in their hands. “Capture the sun, and the steel will never cool.”

Dark Feathers

The Dark Feathers are House Darkner’s secret weapon, a shadowy syndicate of assassins and inquisitors who work outside the constraints of the chivalric code. While the Dawnwardens represent the house’s honorable face, the Dark Feathers handle the dirty work. Most peasants have only heard whispers of the Dark Feathers, how they are the reason outspoken critics suddenly disappear or change their tune. Of course, House Darkner denies their existence altogether.
