~ Bio ~
Born from a bloody coup a century ago, House Veilsong now cloaks their dark origins behind beauty, music, and wisdom. While they lack military might and raw wealth, their mastery of magic and secrets makes them dangerous opponents and indispensable allies.
Culture: House Veilsong is a realm of beauty, performance, and mystery. Music flows as powerfully as the numerous rivers through their domain, and none on the coast can rival their artistry. Yet even for all their talent, most of Avalayle know them from their famous arcane candle making. These Wick Wakers craft long-burning, richly scented candles infused with potent arcane powers. Life under Veilsong rule feels like one long elegant performance.
Education and Arcane Mastery: Where other houses train warriors and merchants, Veilsong trains minds and souls. Knowledge is held in high regard, and learning is never rushed. Students are expected to master not only facts but grace, rhetoric, and the interplay of magic, music, and philosophy. Lectures last hours, debate is encouraged, and every graduate emerges enlightened and entitled in equal measure.
Throughout the Spire, a number of academies connect through arcane bridges and way points. The largest of them is Twilight Hall, the crown jewel of magical education on the coast. Here students delve into the fundamental elements of spellcraft, the researching of ley lines, and the delicate balance needed to wield raw magic. Classes range from theoretical discourse in starlit lecture halls to practical work on the moonlit waters of Lake Vaeloria.
Espionage and Subterfuge: Veilsong wields espionage better than any house on the coast, and shapes its fate with their enemies none the wiser. Their elites become the Veilstalkers, a nightmare of violence, spellwoven daggers, enchanted swords, and bursts of raw arcane force.
Military: Veilsong’s military is deliberately small and specialized, and avoid open battle whenever possible. Those that join the Star Song Conservatory learn the art of Blade Dancing, a graceful dual wielding technique that emphasizes feints, misdirection, and overwhelming speed. Fighters move like dancers, using illusions to multiply their image or hide their true position. Even so, this bardic force is not large enough to meet their enemies in the fields. While impressive during the Avalayle Grand, and superb duelists, House Veilsong has no desire to fight large, grinding battles of war. Their entire military philosophy centers on ending conflicts long before they can begin. They strike preemptively, and with overwhelming initiative so that enemy armies never have the chance to form ranks, raise banners, or coordinate.
Only in the rarest and most dire circumstances does the house resort to full mobilization. In these desperate last-ditch moments, they conscript heavily from across their domain: pulling Veilstalkers out of the shadows, calling upon minstrels, and pressing large numbers of academy mages and ritualists into service.
Political Influence: House Veilsong understands that true power is rarely won with steel. Thus they pour coin, favors, and arcane resources into supporting playwrights, composers, poets, and painters across the coast. These artists in turn sing Veilsong praises outside of their domain, swaying the masses hearts in their direction.
Additionally, they offer enchanted wards for warehouses, arcane escorts for valuable caravans, and safe passage through dangerous areas nearly free of charge. Their generosity is welcomed by the commonfolk, and rarely questioned.
Wealth: Veilsong is strangely poor for such a prestigious house. While their domain doesn’t lack for rich farmland, timber, or lucrative trade routes, the Glorious Lineage of Veilsong simply cares more about their research, projects and studies than mastering trade. Furthermore, their heavy investment in grand academies, endless patronage, and expensive arcane research constantly drains their coffers.
While their main income is sourced from tuition fees of students attending the Spire, their second source is far less ethical. Raslara, the Jewel of the Coast, is perhaps the most visited city in all of Avalayle. Known for its high-end gambling halls, pleasure gardens, and private salons, the city caters to the wealthy and powerful. Here, a person can forget their troubles for a while, lose their coin, and get lost in the enchanted wonders of Veilsong.
FACTIONS
The Star Song Conservatory (Bardic Collective)
With towers, lecture halls and theatres located throughout the Spire, the conservatory trains the domains finest artists. Every member is first and foremost a student of a specific craft, but are also made to serve as diplomats, spies, and servants to the Throne.
Ballader- All new entrants to the Conservatory begin as Balladers, regardless of talent or birth. Balladers are apprentices and students who spend their first years immersed in voice training, ritual dance, history, arcane theory, and the subtle arts of persuasion. They perform in local festivals, taverns, and minor courts, learning how to read a crowd, gather rumors, and plant stories. Their primary duty is to learn while advancing House Veilsong’s image among the common folk and lesser nobility.
Midnight Minstrel- Upon graduating, every Ballader earns the title of Midnight Minstrel, and are then charged with traveling the coast performing in rival courts, merchant caravans, and noble salons. They spread Veilsong narratives, collect intelligence, and sway more folk to join the conservatory. Many work directly alongside the commonfolk, using music and performance as cover and weapon.
Starweaver- Promotion to Starweaver is granted only after a Midnight Minstrel has achieved significant public or covert success. Candidates must demonstrate mastery of “song-weaving”, the rare ability to fuse music with powerful magic. Promotion is decided by the current Bard Extraordinaires and the Headmasters of the Conservatory. Starweavers lead large festivals, train the next generation, serve as ambassadors, and undertake house-directed projects.
Bard Extraordinaire- There are rarely more than a handful of Bard Extraordinaires at any time. These living legends have reshaped history through their art, performances, and diplomacy. Elevation is only granted by the High Lord of Veilsong, who expects a great deal in return. They must serve the court of Veilsong, lead the Conservatory, and prove their loyalty to the Glorious Lineage without question. Some view the position as the highest honor within the arts, while others consider it a prison on their creativity. Regardless, those few that exist hold some of the greatest power of all those on the coast.
The Wizards of Academia Arcanum
Known by the locals as Twilight Hall, those pledged to the mysteries of the arcane come from throughout Avalayle to learn what House Veilsong has discovered. Scattered throughout the campuses of the Spire, these studious wizards lead abstract lives. The Wizards of Academia Arcanum are divided into three distinct orders, each with its own specialization and philosophy.
Ranks
Neophyte – The entry rank. New students and apprentices who are still proving their talent and dedication.
Wizard – Fully recognized practitioners who both study advanced magic and teach lower ranks.
Archwizard – The singular leader and greatest master of each order. There is only one Archwizard per order at any time. They set the strategic direction, approve major projects, and represent their order on the Twilight Council.
The three Archwizards together form the inner leadership of the Academia Arcanum and wield enormous influence within House Veilsong, often acting as the cautious, intellectual counterbalance to the more flamboyant bards.
The Order of the Silver Lance- Masters of evocation, necromancy, and transmutation. Its members are the living embodiment of focused, overwhelming arcane destruction. Clad in flowing robes, their eyes contain the fury of the stars. In battle they call down silver meteors, unleash lancing beams of starfire, and warp gravity to crush cavalry charges or hurl entire companies into the air.
Despite their destructive focus, they are not bloodthirsty. They see themselves as instruments of necessity, House Veilsong’s mighty sword. A Lance's study never ends, as each discovery brings new questions and untold mysteries.
The Starfire Collective- The steadfast guardian of House Veilsong and Twilight Hall and the philosophical counterpart to the Order of the Silver Lance. Where the Lance seeks to destroy, the Starfire Collective seeks to protect. “In thy time, the coast will come to know House Veilsong and its allies as utterly unassailable.” These wizards are the most patient and methodical of all Veilsong mages. Many spend decades perfecting a single ritual or until it becomes unbreakable.
Masters of abjuration and conjuration, their expertise includes powerful wards, complex counter-spells, anti-magic fields, and enchantments. In battle they raise shimmering domes of starlight that can repel arrows, blades, and dragonfire. Outside of combat they maintain the grand arcane defenses of the Spire itself, enchant goods, and develop rituals to improve harvest and the life of the commonfolk.
The Starforge Luminarchs- The craftsmen and visionaries of Twilight Hall. While the Silver Lance destroys and the Starfire Collective protects, the Luminarchs create. They are the most reclusive of the three orders, often disappearing for months or even years into their forges, scriptoriums, and laboratories.
Masters of enchantment and construction, they create magic items and wondrous artifacts. From intricately carved wands and ever-burning candles, to powerful battle staves and protective amulets, the Luminarchs are responsible for much of House Veilsong’s arcane exports and internal power. Their work is slow, deliberate, and obsessive. In their time, a Luminarch may only create 3 pieces, dedicating ten to twenty years to each work.
A Brief History of House Veilsong:
100 years ago: High Lady Seraphine Veilsong orchestrates the assassination of the previous ruling bloodline, House Redewex, and seizes power during a grand festival.
98 years ago: Seraphine orders the systematic purging of disloyal nobles and mages from the old regime, replacing them with her own loyalists.
92 years ago: Construction begins on the Spire across Lake Vaeloria. Thousands of enchanted candles and ritual dances mark the groundbreaking, turning the project into a public spectacle of renewal and arcane ambition.
85 years ago: The first Starsong Conservatory is officially founded within the growing Spire, formalizing the training of bards, diplomats, and spies under the motto “Dare To Be Wise.”
78 years ago: The Starforge Luminarchs perfect the formula for arcane candles. These enchanted candles are soon distributed across the coast as gifts, and in time sold by traveling merchants.
67 years ago: High Lord Valesong establishes The Gray and grants them dominion over the city of Raslara, creating a permanent source of wealth and intelligence through vice and entertainment.
62 years ago: The first public Lakesong Festival draws record crowds from rival houses. The performance is so mesmerizing that several minor lords swear fealty or offer favorable trade deals the following week.
53 years ago: High Lady Seraphine dies, naming her son Sabus Veilsong to be her replacement.
41 years ago: The ritual to create the Unfeeling is successfully perfected by High Lord Veilsong and first used on a captured traitor. Thus begins the grim tradition of transforming enemies into emotionless bodyguards.
28 years ago: High Lord Sabus Veilsong begins taking a number of concubines as wives, siring off spring with each of them. As his children age, they are led through rigorous arcane study, and upon passing, are gifted with their own cadre of Unfeeling to protect them.
25 years ago: The Starforge Luminarchs unveil the Dreamweave Candle, capable of casting scrying when shared between two lit candles that share the same enchanted wick. It instantly became the most sought-after luxury item amongst nobles on the coast.
19 years ago: After winning the Avalayle Grand, the Archwizard Kaemys Londak begs for the miracle, “Burn out the wickedness in my leader’s heart, so something pure and worthy may be born anew. But should his treachery run too deep, and no fertile soil for goodness can be found, let the Sibling Gods smite him where he stands.” The Honored Blood beseech the Gods, and rumors run rampant throughout courts. Within a month, the Archwizard is found dead, and amongst High Lord Veilsong’s personal Unfeeling guard. When questioned, the High Lord declares publicly, “It seems the God’s find me pure enough, and instead have smote our champion. But fear not, I will not waste the talents of Archwizard Londak go unwasted. Let him live forevermore a witness to my fertile goodness.”
15 years ago: High Lord Veilsong begins hosting the Starlit Masque alongside his seasonal hosting of the Avalayle Grand, a masked ball within Castle Ilragorn. It is the epitome of prestige and grace, and comes to be a beloved event by the nobles of the coast.
9 years ago: At only seven years old, Wulfren Veilsong begins to show extraordinary arcane promise. In a fit of inconsolable rage, his outburst sunders an entire wing of Castle Ilragorn, injuring dozens and killing six people.
6 years ago: High Lord Veilsong begins meeting with various monsters now populating the coast, attempting to deduce where they’ve come from, and why.
Coveted Magic
The Unfeeling, and their major factions. Valesong is so thoroughly adorned with magic that nearly everything about their house is coveted by the others.
The Ambiguous
The Ambiguous appears, when at rest, as an elegant silver band etched with a continuously shifting constellation of stars that rearrange themselves in hypnotic patterns. Those who look at it feel waves of warmth and comfort, while those who wear it feel an uncanny, mercurial presence that makes their skin crawl.
Forged in secret by High Lady Seraphine Veilsong on the night of her coup, using the corpses and souls of the slaughtered. It has only passed hands once, leaving Seraphine as she died and gracing her son Sabus.
The Unfeeling
Veilsong’s elite personal bodyguards, enforcers, and living weapons, openly displayed as a brutal warning to any who would challenge the house. Once prisoners, traitors, and the personal enemies of the ruling family, they have had their minds completely and irreversibly destroyed by waves of arcana. What remains are perfect, emotionless killing machines, bodies that retain all their former martial skill, arcane talent, and physical ability, but no free will.
Their bodies move with eerie precision, feel no pain, fear, or fatigue. Even after suffering wounds that would kill a normal person, their limbs continue moving, driven by the spells woven into their broken minds. Even so, the Unfeeling are rarely made to act. Their presence is intimidating enough.
House Veilsong makes no attempt to hide what the Unfeeling are. When foreign dignitaries visit Castle Ilragorn, the Unfeeling stand at attention behind their liege. They are made to serve, fight and humor in equal measure. Most consider the Unfeeling to be dead, but many wonder if they are aware of being imprisoned within their own bodies.
The Gray
A sophisticated cabal of merchants, mages, and operators who control the vast network of gambling dens, pleasure gardens, private salons, and underground dealings in the city of Raslara.
While House Veilsong publicly maintains an image of elegance and enlightenment, The Gray handles the less savory (but extremely profitable) side of the house’s wealth. They run Raslara as their private domain: a glittering sinful city where nobles, merchants, and spies from every house come to gamble, indulge, and make deals they would never risk elsewhere. Beneath the surface of opulent pleasure houses lies a tightly controlled web of information trading, blackmail, smuggling, and discreet enforcement.
Many of its senior members are mages from Twilight Hall or former Midnight Minstrels who use magic to influence games, extract secrets, and protect operations. They speak softly, dress immaculately, and maintain perfect courtesy.
